Weekly Reading Recap

book and coffee

It's Monday! It's been two weeks since my last update. So much for my commitment to participate in this meme every week this year! I have to say I'm just not as motivated to write anymore. I have so many reviews outstanding but I just never feel like getting on my computer in the evenings and writing reviews. I need to snap out of it! I had a great couple of weeks, topped off by a 5 mile hike with Carter on Sunday while my husband and daughter went horseback riding with their Y Guides tribe. We went to a local park and hiked 5 miles. It was mostly due to my book selection for the week, which you can read about down below.

Blog posts and reviews

Last week, I reviewed Thinner in 30 by Jenna Wolfe.

That's it. I really need to find something to motivate me to write!!

What I'm reading

I finished The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown. I'm heading to book club tomorrow to discuss this book and I'm looking forward to it. After that, I read A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson. Now I'm starting Maisie Dobbs by Jacueline Winspear. I'm glad I read the two nonfiction books but am looking forward to losing myself in some fiction!

What my kids are reading

M, who is in 3rd grade, is halfway done with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling. We enjoyed watching the sixth movie last week and are looking forward to watching the last two soon! Then I will be looking for new books for her to read.

Carter, who is in 6th grade, is reading The People of Sparks by Jeanne DuPrau. He liked the first book in the series, so he is continuing with it.

I'm linking up with Book Date for It's Monday! What Are You Reading? as well as Unleashing Readers and Teach Mentor Texts for the children's and YA version of this weekly gathering. What are you reading? Please share in the comments!

  1. Both these books are unfamiliar to me - thanks for sharing! :)

  2. Yay! You're reading Maisie Dobbs. I really liked this first installment. I like the smooth vibe and how they dressed. I'm also reading HP7. It'll refresh my internal file of HP facts.

  3. I love Bill Bryson, he's got such an intelligent sense of humour, and I learn so much through his books!

  4. I think I would enjoy Maisie Dobbs.

Have a great rest of your reading week.

  5. I am the same way with reviews right now! My late afternoons & early evenings (when I normally blog) have been full with family stuff and by the time I sit down, I am too pooped to write. I was determined to write one tonight (from January!) but my son and his girlfriend were here for dinner & then hung out with us in the family room (a rarity).

Anyway, I loved the DuPrau series - glad your son is enjoying it.

You've been reading a nice variety lately...but I'm the same - too much nonfiction & I need my fiction fix! The author of Boys in the Boat is coming here in April to give a talk for our All-County Reads program - can't wait!

  6. Well you're ahead of me, both my reading has slacked and participating in this meme I haven't done in forever. I am glad you're 3rd grader is reading HP. My 3rd grader didn't care for the movies so he doesn't want to read the books! I'm still working on it because he does love to read.

Freedom to Read Giveaway Hop

I Am A Reader, Not A Writer and Mundie Moms are hosting the Freedom to Read Giveaway Hop in honor of Independence Day in the United States, and I've decided to participate.

To stick with the theme of Independence Day, I'm doing what I did last year for this hop:

I'm giving away a book of your choice that is written by an author from the United States.
It can be any genre as long as the author is from the United States. You choose the book (up to $15), and I'll order it and have it mailed to you from Book Depository.

The contest ends on Thursday, July 5th at midnight Eastern Time. The winner will be notified by e-mail. If they do not respond within 48 hours, a new winner will be drawn.

Happy 4th of July! I hope you have a safe and fun holiday!

Getting back to blogging

It seems that blogging has dropped to the bottom of my list for the past year, and was pretty low for the year or two prior to that. I love to read, and am continuing to do so, but as my regular readers know I haven't been around much. My last blog post was almost a year ago!!

There are many things that have taken me away from blogging. Work has been much more challenging and interesting these past few years, but that means I really don't want to get back on the computer when I get home at night - or on the weekends.

Family life has been more busy with kids having multiple activities in the evenings, leaving little time to just hang out and write about the books that I read.

I will admit to a bit of a Facebook addiction, which means way too much time spent scrolling through my newsfeed instead of doing something more productive. This is one of the things I'm working on and hoping that this will free up some time for getting back to the blog.

Overall, life is good. Work is …
