Weekly Reading Recap

book and coffee

Happy Monday! One of my blog goals for 2016 is to participate in this meme every week. So here I am again. Let's see if I can keep this going! Another goal is to publish at least one review each week, and last week I actually published two! It's quite amazing!

Blog posts and reviews

One of those reviews is also a giveaway so be sure to check it out and possibly win a copy of The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee. The giveaway ends at midnight Tuesday night!

I also published a review of the highly popular book The Good Girl by Mary Kubica.

What I'm reading

Since last week, I finished The Good Girl and started a new book that was actually written by my friend's cousin: Circle of Betrayal by Jaqueline Simon Gunn. So far it's engaging, although a bit more "adult content" than I'm used to (but I'm sure that appeals to many of my readers... you know who you are!). I'm intrigued with this psychological mystery written by a clinical psychologist.

What my kids are reading

M, who is in 3rd grade, is still working on Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling. She's actually lying on my office floor right now immersed in this book. I'm hoping she is able to finish it up soon and move on to the next one. She is definitely loving the Harry Potter series!

Carter, who is in 6th grade, read Code Talker: A Novel About the Navajo Marines of World War II by Joseph Bruchac. Then we found a great list of books for teen boys and he picked out The Alchemyst by Michael Scott. He was intrigued by the connection to Harry Potter since it's about Nicholas Flamel. Assuming he likes this one, I expect he will be reading the rest of the series as well.

I'm linking up with Book Date for It's Monday! What Are You Reading? as well as Unleashing Readers and Teach Mentor Texts for the children's and YA version of this weekly gathering. What are you reading? Please share in the comments!

  1. Well, you're off to a good start on 2016! I am behind already - probably still trying to do too much!!

I'd like to read The Good Girl - heard a lot of good things about it.

Hope your son enjoys The Alchemyst - we listened to the first book on audio and liked it.

Enjoy your books this week -

  2. I love how you include your children's reading in the post.

Circle of Betrayal sounds good. I like psychological mystery every once in a while.

    Have a good week.

  3. I love seeing how your child is hooked on Harry Potter. My own girl started reading (and liking) Harry Potter the year she turned 13, and she simply couldn't get enough of it.

Getting back to blogging

It seems that blogging has dropped to the bottom of my list for the past year, and was pretty low for the year or two prior to that. I love to read, and am continuing to do so, but as my regular readers know I haven't been around much. My last blog post was almost a year ago!!

There are many things that have taken me away from blogging. Work has been much more challenging and interesting these past few years, but that means I really don't want to get back on the computer when I get home at night - or on the weekends.

Family life has been more busy with kids having multiple activities in the evenings, leaving little time to just hang out and write about the books that I read.

I will admit to a bit of a Facebook addiction, which means way too much time spent scrolling through my newsfeed instead of doing something more productive. This is one of the things I'm working on and hoping that this will free up some time for getting back to the blog.

Overall, life is good. Work is …
