Week in Review

       aaa1

It's Monday again so time for another weekly recap. It was a good week and a great weekend. My daughter and I spent yesterday doing a girls' day out. We went to brunch, then went to see a matinee of Cinderella. We both enjoyed it, although it is quite a sad story. After the movie we got our nails done just in time for sandal weather! We finished the day off with frozen yogurt. It was a lot of fun!

Reviews and Blog Posts
I got a few things published on the blog last week.

Book Review: The Daughter by Jane Shemilt
Beyond Books: Grilled Potatoes Recipe
Book Review: Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo

Reading
I finished reading The Daughter and then moved on to The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry: A Novel by Gabrielle Zevin, which I loved. I will write a review this week. After that, I started September Sky by John Heldt.

M is finally finishing Maleficent by Elizabeth Rudnick, which follows the storyline of the movie. She and I also started our new book group at school on Friday. We are reading Bunnicula: A Rabbit Tale of Mystery by Deborah and James Howe. The vocabulary seems a bit challenging for this group of second graders, but hopefully we'll make it work!

What are you reading this week? It's Monday! is hosted by Sheila at Book Journey, so hop over there if you'd like to see what others are reading too. You can also check out the younger version of It's Monday!

  1. Thanks for your honest review of The Daughter. (although it doesn't sound like my kind of book at the best of times) I've got The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry on my to read list and hope to get to it eventually. I look forward to reading your review of it. Because of Winn-Dixie is a classic. Every generation of reader who reads it (we have a lit circle set) ends up loving it.

    1. Thanks for stopping by and commenting! A.J. Fikry was wonderful. I need to spend some time writing my review. Do get to it soon. I'm so glad my daughter's teacher picked Winn-Dixie for the group as we all loved it. I'm hoping we enjoy Bunnicula as much, but it seems quite different of course.

  2. I love Because of Winn Dixie...and actually, anything by Kate DiCamillo - she's a genius! Somehow, I missed Bunnicula all these years :)

Enjoy your books this week -

    1. Yes! I thought Bunnicula was a new book but apparently it's been around for a very long time. I don't know how I never heard of it before now!

  3. My two book clubs discussed AJ Fikry - we all loved the book. I think I have a personal copy of Bunnicula - I didn't realize it was part of a series! :)

Freedom to Read Giveaway Hop

I Am A Reader, Not A Writer and Mundie Moms are hosting the Freedom to Read Giveaway Hop in honor of Independence Day in the United States, and I've decided to participate.

To stick with the theme of Independence Day, I'm doing what I did last year for this hop:

I'm giving away a book of your choice that is written by an author from the United States.
It can be any genre as long as the author is from the United States. You choose the book (up to $15), and I'll order it and have it mailed to you from Book Depository.

The contest ends on Thursday, July 5th at midnight Eastern Time. The winner will be notified by e-mail. If they do not respond within 48 hours, a new winner will be drawn.

Happy 4th of July! I hope you have a safe and fun holiday!

Getting back to blogging

It seems that blogging has dropped to the bottom of my list for the past year, and was pretty low for the year or two prior to that. I love to read, and am continuing to do so, but as my regular readers know I haven't been around much. My last blog post was almost a year ago!!

There are many things that have taken me away from blogging. Work has been much more challenging and interesting these past few years, but that means I really don't want to get back on the computer when I get home at night - or on the weekends.

Family life has been more busy with kids having multiple activities in the evenings, leaving little time to just hang out and write about the books that I read.

I will admit to a bit of a Facebook addiction, which means way too much time spent scrolling through my newsfeed instead of doing something more productive. This is one of the things I'm working on and hoping that this will free up some time for getting back to the blog.

Overall, life is good. Work is …
