Maddy and Ben are dealing with a troubled marriage. Ben spends more time with his clients than his family and has a hard time controlling his temper. Maddy is overwhelmed with work, and taking care of three kids and a house. In the middle of yet another argument, while driving in the rain, Ben steps on the accelerator and drives them into a tree. Maddy ends up in the hospital fighting for her life.
Accidents of Marriage
The novel starts by introducing the family and getting into some of the issues with their marriage. One of the key components of the story is Ben's temper, but it was hard to see it clearly at this point. Maddy made comments about it, and there were a few times when he would say something and someone would tell him to stop yelling. But I didn't realize he was yelling to begin with. So I had a hard time feeling that he was really a bad guy with a temper, aside from the other characters mentioning it.
Otherwise, the storyline kept me interested throughout. Ben struggles with the guilt of having caused the accident, along with worry about charges being drawn up against him. Maddy struggles to recover and to deal with her husband's lies. The three kids all struggle to adapt to this new life they've found themselves in. It's definitely a family saga!
Overall, Accidents of Marriage is an emotional look into a family that is slowly being torn apart by a struggling marriage and a tragic accident. If you enjoy contemporary family dramas, you should check it out.

I can only imagine how difficult it would be to live in a family like this. What a challenge!
