When travel columnist Heather Bregman decides she needs to get away from her city life and her controlling fiancée, she purchases a beautiful Victorian house on the lake. She figures she'll settle in to the Nagog community and enjoy her time by the lake making new friends. But soon she realizes that the residents of this little community have all been there since they were young children, and they're all senior citizens now! They have a strong history and are not welcoming at all. The only person Heather really connects with is Victoria Rose, who grew up at the lake but moved away to chase her Hollywood dream. It's been 50 years, and Victoria is back, trying to settle into the community herself. But she is learning that old resentments are hard to overcome.
The Lake House by Marci Nault was a wonderful summer read. And although summer is over now, if you enjoy women's fiction, you'll enjoy this one. It's about friendships and what makes them last - or fall apart. It's about the choices we make and how they can affect us for the rest of our lives. And it's about love and relationships. For Heather, she is reevaluating her love life and her career. For Victoria, she is trying to get past the tragedies of her life and find peace. For the residents of Nagog, they are fighting to hold onto their independence and sense of community.
The characters, both old and young, were all quite fun and interesting.
The story was engaging and the relationships seemed fairly realistic. Some things were a bit over the top, but for the most part, it was an enjoyable read and an interesting take on the differences and similarities between the young and the old.
My Rating: 4/5
This review was written based on a copy of The Lake House that I received from Kelley & Hall Book Publicity in exchange for an honest review.
I love the cover too! Julie, it would be super if you stopped by Carole's chatter to add this to this month's Books You Loved collection. Cheers
ReplyDeleteI'll try, Carole! Thanks for stopping by.

ReplyDeleteNow I am curious - was that shorter than your normal reviews? I thought it was still thorough and complete!

It was not shorter. I couldn't do it!! I may do a single review of multiple book club books, though. This one was a review book. I think for backlog of book club books, I'll just combine them into one short review. We'll see....
