What My Children Are Reading

The kids have been reading up a storm this week. I still am in awe when I hear them read. I don't get to hear C read aloud much anymore, but to know he's reading books like Diary of a Wimpy Kid amazes me. And hearing M reading her first books is so fun!

Hot Pot: The Sound of Short O (Wonder Books)This week M has been reading Hot Pot: The Sound of Short (O) by Alice K. Flanagan. This is another book in the Wonder Books series, which I really like for her. Each page has just one sentence with simple words that relate directly to the pictures. This one is about a child who is cooking corn with her mom. We will definitely be checking more of these books out of the library.

Disney's Princess Storybook Collection (Disney Storybook Collections)We've also been reading through the Disney Princess Storybook Collection by Sarah Heller this week. This is one of M's favorites. It includes stories taken from all sorts of Disney movies, not just the princess stories. This is the first time we've started from the beginning and read each story in order. We're only about halfway through, but I'm sure she'll want to continue into next week.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid Do-It-Yourself BookC finished the first Diary of a Wimpy Kid book, so as promised, I bought him Diary of a Wimpy Kid Do-It-Yourself by Jeff Kinney. I thought it might be over his head, but he's actually been filling in all sorts of information, like his favorite songs and video games, and designing his dream house. The last part of the book is an actual diary, so I explained that he should write things about his days there, but he hasn't started that yet. He does seem to really like the book though.

The Talent Show from the Black Lagoon (Black Lagoon Adventures, No. 2)He also is working his way through the Black Lagoon Adventures books by Mike Thaler. Last week he read The Talent Show from the Black Lagoon and The Class Election from the Black Lagoon. He can read each book in about 15 to 20 minutes, which works perfectly for his evening reading homework. And he seems to like the books. I haven't read them myself, but evidently they're about some kids who let their imaginations run wild but then end up having a fun adventure in the end.

  1. It's awesome that both M and C enjoy their books. I keep offering chapter books to Anna, but so far she has been mildly interested only in Magic Tree House and Magic School Bus. She is currently reading through a big book of original Winnie the Pooh stories that we have in our own library.

Getting back to blogging

It seems that blogging has dropped to the bottom of my list for the past year, and was pretty low for the year or two prior to that. I love to read, and am continuing to do so, but as my regular readers know I haven't been around much. My last blog post was almost a year ago!!

There are many things that have taken me away from blogging. Work has been much more challenging and interesting these past few years, but that means I really don't want to get back on the computer when I get home at night - or on the weekends.

Family life has been more busy with kids having multiple activities in the evenings, leaving little time to just hang out and write about the books that I read.

I will admit to a bit of a Facebook addiction, which means way too much time spent scrolling through my newsfeed instead of doing something more productive. This is one of the things I'm working on and hoping that this will free up some time for getting back to the blog.

Overall, life is good. Work is …
