Book Lists for Book Clubs

Did you know that October is National Reading Group Month? The Women's National Book Association has put together a list of Great Group Reads for 2010:
Blame by Michelle Huneven
The Blessings of the Animals by Katrina Kittle
Cheap Cabernet: A Friendship by Cathie Beck
Eternal on the Water by Joseph Monninger
The Girl Who Fell from the Sky by Heidi W. Durrow
Little Bee by Chris Cleave
The Lotus Eaters by Tatjana Soli
Molly Fox's Birthday by Deirdre Madden
The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender
The Queen of Palmyra by Minrose Gwin
Room by Emma Donoghue
Safe from the Sea by Peter Geye
Up from the Blue by Susan Henderson
You can go to the National Reading Group Month site to read a synopsis of each. My book club has only read one of these (Little Bee, which is our October selection) so I know we'll be checking out some of these others.

In addition, ReadingGroupGuides has announced the Top Ten Discussion Books based on an extensive survey done earlier in the year. My book club actually participated in the survey, providing our own list of the top ten books we've discussed. Unfortunately, we didn't win one of the $200 prizes for contributing, but I was excited to see many of our selections on the final Top Ten Discussion Books list.

They also put together some more specific Top Ten lists:
Top 10 Classics
Top 10 Memoirs/Biographies
Top 10 Young Adults/Kids Books
Top 10 Books Featuring Animals
Selections You Might Not Expect

If you're part of a book club and looking for some suggestions, check out all of these lists. I know I'll be sharing them with my club! And even if you're not part of a book club, I'm sure you can find some great ideas for future reads among these lists.

Freedom to Read Giveaway Hop

I Am A Reader, Not A Writer and Mundie Moms are hosting the Freedom to Read Giveaway Hop in honor of Independence Day in the United States, and I've decided to participate.

To stick with the theme of Independence Day, I'm doing what I did last year for this hop:

I'm giving away a book of your choice that is written by an author from the United States.
It can be any genre as long as the author is from the United States. You choose the book (up to $15), and I'll order it and have it mailed to you from Book Depository.

The contest ends on Thursday, July 5th at midnight Eastern Time. The winner will be notified by e-mail. If they do not respond within 48 hours, a new winner will be drawn.

Happy 4th of July! I hope you have a safe and fun holiday!

Freedom Giveaway Hop

Simply Stacie and I Am A Reader, Not A Writer are hosting the Freedom Giveaway Hop in honor of Independence Day in the United States, and I've decided to participate.

To stick with the theme of Independence Day:

I'm giving away a book of your choice that is written by an author from the United States.
It can be any genre as long as the author is from the United States. You choose the book (up to $15), and I'll order it and have it mailed to you from the vendor of my choice.

To enter, all you have to do is leave a comment below telling me your favorite U.S. author (this doesn't have to be the author of the book you choose if you're the winner). Include your email address so I can contact you if you win. This giveaway is open to U.S. and Canadian mailing addresses only. I've decided to open this up to international entries as long as Book Depository ships to your address.
