What My Children Are Reading This Week

I hope you're all enjoying your weekend. We made a run to the library last weekend, so we got some new books for a refreshing change! I wrote full reviews of two children's books this week: Robot Zot! by Jon Scieszka and David Shannon, and The Frogs and Toads All Sang by Arnold Lobel. Here are some of the other books we read this week:

The Big Fat Cow That Goes KapowC finally finished up The Cat on the Mat is Flat by Andy Griffiths, so we picked up his next book, The Big Fat Cow that Goes Kapow. This second book surprised us because the stories are much shorter and easier to read than the ones in The Cat on the Mat is Flat. I was concerned The Big Fat Cow that Goes Kapow would be more difficult. This was a pleasant surprise, because C is able to pretty much read the stories in this book on his own, with very little help. It's exciting for all of us to see him reading a book like this. I'll write up a full review when he completes it.

First-Grade Friends THE SLEEP OVERFirst-Grade Friends: The Sleep Over by Grace Maccarone is another early reader book that we got from the library. It's a little long and was a bit challenging for C, but he was able to read it over two days. The stories in The Big Fat Cow that Goes Kapow were short enough that he was able to read several pages of this book after finishing a story in that one. The story is about a boy who goes to a sleep-over at a friend's house, but misses his family so he ends up going home. It's part of a series called First-Grade Friends, so I think we'll check out more of these books in the future.

If Kisses Were ColorsI picked up If Kisses Were Colors by Janet Lawler for M this week. She loves anything about babies, and this book has a mama with a baby in a carriage on the front cover. It features whimsical illustrations of animals playing, and simple rhymes about kisses: "If kisses were colors, you'd see every one of the bands of a rainbow that shines in the sun." M has really enjoyed this one.

Lights! Camera! Wubbzy! (Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!)Lights! Camera! Wubbzy! adapted by Lauren Cecil is a book I won in a giveaway recently ~ it came in a Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! prize pack but I'm using each item as a potty training reward, so M hasn't gotten the rest yet! This is a story based on the Wubb Idol movie, which we haven't actually watched yet. In the story, Wubbzy's friends and the Wubb Girlz help Wubbzy deal with stage fright. My kids love Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! so this has been a hit with both of them. Let's hope we have some more progress on the potty training so they can eventually see the other book, DVD and CD!

Getting back to blogging

It seems that blogging has dropped to the bottom of my list for the past year, and was pretty low for the year or two prior to that. I love to read, and am continuing to do so, but as my regular readers know I haven't been around much. My last blog post was almost a year ago!!

There are many things that have taken me away from blogging. Work has been much more challenging and interesting these past few years, but that means I really don't want to get back on the computer when I get home at night - or on the weekends.

Family life has been more busy with kids having multiple activities in the evenings, leaving little time to just hang out and write about the books that I read.

I will admit to a bit of a Facebook addiction, which means way too much time spent scrolling through my newsfeed instead of doing something more productive. This is one of the things I'm working on and hoping that this will free up some time for getting back to the blog.

Overall, life is good. Work is …
