Book Review: Holidays on Ice by David Sedaris

Holidays on Ice: Stories

A stint as an Elf in Macy's SantaLand. A holiday visit from a prostitute. An out-of-control contest between neighbors about who is more giving. Holidays on Ice by David Sedaris is a collection of six comedic holiday-related stories that are anything but warmhearted. The book starts off with "SantaLand Diaries," which made me laugh out loud. The crazy stories about the people who visit Santa at Macy's and the experiences of Sedaris as an Elf were hilarious. And "Dinah, the Christmas Whore" was pretty funny too, as we hear the story of when his sister brought a prostitute home for the holidays.

But I have to admit I was disappointed with the other stories. They weren't nearly as funny to me. Perhaps I need a darker sense of humor. Perhaps it's because the two stories I enjoyed were real stories, whereas the others were fiction. I'm sure the entire collection of stories would be funny to some ~ and the reviews on Amazon show this. But aside from the two stories mentioned above, I just did not enjoy this book nearly as much as I had hoped.

My Rating: 3/5

This review was written based on a copy of Holidays on Ice that I borrowed from the library. This was book 1 of 25 for the Support Your Local Library Reading Challenge.

Getting back to blogging

It seems that blogging has dropped to the bottom of my list for the past year, and was pretty low for the year or two prior to that. I love to read, and am continuing to do so, but as my regular readers know I haven't been around much. My last blog post was almost a year ago!!

There are many things that have taken me away from blogging. Work has been much more challenging and interesting these past few years, but that means I really don't want to get back on the computer when I get home at night - or on the weekends.

Family life has been more busy with kids having multiple activities in the evenings, leaving little time to just hang out and write about the books that I read.

I will admit to a bit of a Facebook addiction, which means way too much time spent scrolling through my newsfeed instead of doing something more productive. This is one of the things I'm working on and hoping that this will free up some time for getting back to the blog.

Overall, life is good. Work is …
